USS Pampanito (SS-383), a Balao-class diesel-electric submarine, was a United States Navy ship used during World War II. She completed six war patrols from 1944 to 1945 in the Pacific.
When USS Pampanito was commissioned on November 6, 1943, she represented the state of the art in submarine design and construction.
Pampanito was restored to a specific point in time, late summer 1945. Except for the hatch and ladders used by visitors to enter and leave her, the submarine is virtually as it was in 1945.
The large ladder and the hole above it were added when Pampanito became a museum. During her service, there was a 21-inch round hatch here, angled down, and just big enough to pass a torpedo for loading.
The submarine's paint scheme is designed to help make her less visible when on a war patrol. The vertical surfaces are painted in two shades of haze gray to blend in with horizon haze when traveling on the surface. The horizontal surfaces are painted black so the boat would blend in with the deep when she was submerged and viewed from an airplane.
This photo pack covers the exterior of the submarine. There is a related product with interior photos.
