Ruapehu is a dormant stratovolcano waiting for its day to erupt once again. This photopack is an observation of the crater ridge and surrounding area.
Hot sulfur smoke whirling from the crater lake created small sized clouds visible from the foot of the mountain and also produced an awful steady stench at the top.
If you are able to spot three dots on the far left of the crater - those are the people crossing it across. The icy white slope that goes all way down into the toxic lake is about 100 metres high and quite deadly to slip on.
